WHY PRENATAL YOGA?
PRENATAL YOGA LINKED TO SHORTER LABOR, LESS PAIN
“Findings published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice suggest that women who regularly practiced prenatal yoga, particularly in the last 10-12 weeks of pregnancy, can improve maternal comfort in labor and experience shorter labor. The findings were consistent even for women with no previous yoga experience, and after controlling for maternal age, income, education level, marital status, religion and maternal trait anxiety. Authors suggest that these effects may occur because yoga involves learning to synchronize breathing awareness and muscle relaxation, yoga movements and breathing may increase endorphins and serotonin, and practicing yoga postures over time can alter pain pathways through the parasympathetic nervous system.”
-Association for Pre- & Perinatal Psychology and Health (APPPAH) Newsletter Summer 2008
MIND-BODY INTERVENTIONS DURING PREGNANCY
Treatment groups who practiced mind-body interventions during pregnancy, such as yoga, had “outcomes including higher birth weight, shorter length of labor, fewer instrument-assisted births, and reduced perceived stress and anxiety”.

MINDFUL YOGA AS A VEHICLE FOR CHILDBIRTH EDUCATION
“The practice of mindful yoga paired with deep relaxation is an excellent body-centered preparation for labor and delivery.”
